Small Copper, Duke of Burgundy & Swallowtail

Small Copper - Although our only copper, the Small Copper isn't really an odd one out here. They are members of the Lycaenidae family, like the Blues and Hairstreaks. This is a beatiful little butterfly, especially when freshly emerged. My wife's favourite.

Duke of Burgundy - This is the UK's sole member of the Metalmark family of butterflies. Great little characters that are a bit of a challenge to find. They are now quite rare and one of our most threatened species.

Taken in May at Ivinghoe Beacon in Bucks

Swallowtail - A very impressive butterfly. Large, stunning, powerful and active. This is the only member of the Swallowtail family of butterflies that breeds in Britain (britannicus) and only inhabits the Norfolk Broads. Well worth seeking out. Another species occasionally finds itself wandering into southern areas of the country but doesn't breed here.
